Honduran authorities warn on cancer

Health authorities said poor education and lack of knowledge favor the incidence of several types of cancer among Hondurans.Education is the fundamental pillar to eliminate suffering and death caused by cancer, according to the director of the Emma Romero Cancer Center, Flora Duarte.

She said the Center treats an average of 963 cases of neoplasia in children and adults, and provides 14,000 outpatient consultations every year. All patients admitted in the Center are in a critical state of health, because our people are not educated for self-examinations, Duarte said.

For her part, Dr. Blanca Padilla, also from the Center, said the most common types of tumors among women are cervix (uterus) and breast cancer, while men suffer from prostate, stomach, lung and penis cancer.

Leukemia equally affects men and women, and children, said Padilla, adding that the incidence of breast cancer has increased as a result of women's refusal to take a mammogram and to examine themselves once a month.

Other risk factors are genetic predisposition, excessive consumption of junk food and smoking, which speeds up the development of lung, throat, tongue and esophagus cancer, she concluded.

Poverty influences on Honduras school desertion

Nearly 62 out of each 100 Honduran children finished primary education in 2007, when school desertion averages reached alarming numbers because of poverty, as reported by official data Tuesday.

Data from the Honduran Education Secretary Office said nearly 20,000 children left the different levels of education in all the departments of Honduras.

This is because of the high indexes of poverty in Honduras, which force students to leave the schools and look for a job.

Reports reveal 300,000 Honduran children lack access to primary education, 65 percent of primary students are repeating one grade at least and only 35 percent has passed the sixth grade at the age of 12.

The Honduran Education Secretary Office estimates that only 1.4 million children go to the different basic education and schools in the 18 Honduran departments.

Honduras approves law to protect forests

The Honduran government approved a new Forest Act to protect the country's forests.
From now on, the Institute for Forest Conservation and Development, Protected Areas and Wildlife will replace COHDEFOR (Honduran Corporation of Forest Development).
For several years, environmental organizations have denounced irregularities in COHDEFOR.
In 2005, the Agency for Environmental Research and the International Policies Center recommended the government to dissolve COHDEFOR, because it was plagued by corruption.
President Manuel Zelaya said the new institution would be a decentralized agency attached to the Presidency. It will have a legal status, a budget and financial autonomy.
When he took office on January 23, 2006, Zelaya said 1 percent of the budget would be used to create a reforestation fund and to protect the country's hydraulic resources.
He also said that his government would end illegal felling and an Incentive Act would be passed to encourage landowners to implement reforestation programs.
According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Honduras lost 35 percent of forests from 1990 to 2005, mainly due to the illegal felling of pine trees and precious timber.

Honduras to Import Venezuelan Oil

Authorities of Honduras and Petroleos de Venezuela S.A (PDVSA) met to prepare first purchases of Venezuelan oil within the framework of an initiative by Petrocaribe.
According the minister of the presidency, Enrique Flores, both parts define the programming, calendar, inspection and security of the project.
Through an agreement with Petrocaribe, Honduras foresees importing the entire amount needed for its thermal generators that produce 70 percent of electricity used in the country.
The agreement includes the purchase of 30 percent of the gasoline and gas of domestic use.
Imports will be 20 thousand barrels a day that have a price of 1.560 billion dollars payable in two years.
60 percent is payable in cash within the first 90 days and the remaining 40 percent is payable in 25 years with 24 months of grace and an interest of one percent.
According to Flores, with the credits about 345 million dollars derived from the purchase of fuel oil, small dams will be built, the state electricity company will develop and agricultural credits will be awarded that directly benefit the population.
Currently foreign transnational companies such as Texaco, Shell, Esso and the local Dippsa control the internal market of oil derivatives.
Asdrubal Chavez, PDVSA vice president and the ambassador in Tegucigalpa, Claudio Osorio, head the Venezuelan delegation.
The executive director of the Administrative Commission of Oil, Lucy Bu, the Energy minister, Rixi Moncada and international consultant, Robert Meyeringh, represent the Central American nation, for its part.
The agreement still needs Congressional approval that returned it to the president last Friday claiming formal errors in the text although it is expected to pass in an extraordinary session.
Petrocaribe is a cooperation agreement in energy proposed by the Bolivarian government of Venezuela to solve asymmetries in access to fuel through favorable, equitable and fair exchange among the nations of the Caribbean region.
Honduras was admitted to the cooperation pact of energy last December 22 during the 4th Summit of Petrocaribe held in Cienfuegos, Cuba.
