Poverty influences on Honduras school desertion

Nearly 62 out of each 100 Honduran children finished primary education in 2007, when school desertion averages reached alarming numbers because of poverty, as reported by official data Tuesday.

Data from the Honduran Education Secretary Office said nearly 20,000 children left the different levels of education in all the departments of Honduras.

This is because of the high indexes of poverty in Honduras, which force students to leave the schools and look for a job.

Reports reveal 300,000 Honduran children lack access to primary education, 65 percent of primary students are repeating one grade at least and only 35 percent has passed the sixth grade at the age of 12.

The Honduran Education Secretary Office estimates that only 1.4 million children go to the different basic education and schools in the 18 Honduran departments.
