Honduran authorities warn on cancer

Health authorities said poor education and lack of knowledge favor the incidence of several types of cancer among Hondurans.Education is the fundamental pillar to eliminate suffering and death caused by cancer, according to the director of the Emma Romero Cancer Center, Flora Duarte.

She said the Center treats an average of 963 cases of neoplasia in children and adults, and provides 14,000 outpatient consultations every year. All patients admitted in the Center are in a critical state of health, because our people are not educated for self-examinations, Duarte said.

For her part, Dr. Blanca Padilla, also from the Center, said the most common types of tumors among women are cervix (uterus) and breast cancer, while men suffer from prostate, stomach, lung and penis cancer.

Leukemia equally affects men and women, and children, said Padilla, adding that the incidence of breast cancer has increased as a result of women's refusal to take a mammogram and to examine themselves once a month.

Other risk factors are genetic predisposition, excessive consumption of junk food and smoking, which speeds up the development of lung, throat, tongue and esophagus cancer, she concluded.
