Lopez Obrador for energy referendum

Mexican former presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador reiterated his demand for a national referendum to decide the destiny of Mexican oil while beginning a new tour through the whole country Wednesday.

Lopez Obrador considered the popular consulting should be carried out when the national debate to be developed on the topic in the Mexican Senate starting May 13, with a duration of 71 days, finishes.

That debate will be the result of the agreements adopted by the different parliamentary groups after the occupation during 16 days of the presidencies of the two Cameras of the Legislative by the legislators of the Progressive Wide Front (FAP).

That group is opposed to the energy reform project presented by the Mexican government, together with the National Movement in Defense of Petroleum led by Lopez Obrador. The government considers the project opens the doors to crude oil privatization, constitutionally banned.

During his tour, Lopez Obrador will take oath to the new members of the oil defense brigades, an instrument for the mobilization of the opposed people to privatization on the streetsFor July 29, it is expected those brigades to already have 200,000 members and they were convoked for an activity in Mexico City´s Zocalo.
