Strike in most of Guatemala transportation
At least 90 percent of Guatemala is affected by the heavy transportation strike, which is on its third day today.Nearly 1,200 containers loaded with merchandise, some of them perishable, are stranded in Atlantic and Pacific roads, according to organizers of the protests.
Truck driver union leader Wilson Carreto recalled that they are demanding the abolition of a rule banning the entry of heavy trucks in the capital during the afternoon rush hour.
It is the period of greatest traffic in the city. With this ruling, we are trying to make traffic more free flowing and prevent residents from wasting time, said Spokeswoman for the Mayor's Office Maria Jose Salas.
In the last few hours, a committee was created in the Executive and Legislative bodies to discuss the situation and plan an eventual intervention to out an end to the crisis.
