French Foreign Minister to visit Ecuador
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner begins a visit Tuesday to Ecuador after meeting Colombian President Alvaro Uribe to resume negotiations with the FARC.Although Kouchner refused to give press interviews, it is known that he carried a letter of President Nicolas Sarkozy with proposals to arrange a humanitarian accord to exchange prisoners with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
The French diplomat also met with Colombian counterpart Fernando Araujo, Senator Piedad Cordova, and Yolanda Pulecio, mother of FARC hostage and former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and released ex members of Congress.
After the meeting with Kouchner, Cordova voiced hope for the possible release of hostages that hinted aápossible arrangement of a humanitarian accord, all of which depend of President Uribe.
A source of the French delegation said Kouchner is to meet today in Quito with President Rafael Correa, Security Minister Gustavo Larrea, Interior Minister Fernando Bustamante and Foreign Minister Maria Isabel Salvador.
At the end of the day Kouchner will pay a second visit to Caracas, Venezuela, to meet Friday with President Hugo Chavez, following his February 20 and 21 calls to Caracas and Bogota with similar purpose.
