Bolivians criticize referendums

Three Bolivian women nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize, and academics from the eastern department of Santa Cruz separately rejected the autonomous consultations encouraged by the so called Crescent, and warned of possible confrontations.

According to former Ombudswoman Ana Maria Romero de Campero, Domitila Chungara, and Nicolasa Machaca, the leaders of Beni, Pando, Santa Cruz, and Tarija must set the demanded autonomy within a constitutional framework.

That would prevent Bolivia from plunging into a "low intensity war" with violent confrontations," they sustained.Romero Campero, currently leading UNIR foundation, warned a larger debate must be held, in line with the Constitution and before May 4, when Santa Cruz plans to hold the first of those consultations.

In a meeting with press, she lamented the possible consequences after that referendum, "because conflicts and violence could last for some time."Machaca, leader of the Women for Peace Movement, called upon the government and Santa Cruz authorities to dialogue.

For her part, Chungara, well known in Bolivia for the 1978 strike of female miners, questioned the stance of the Santa Cruz authorities, who "are only looking out for their own interests," and if the referendum is held, they will inherit a country full of conflict, she remarked.
