Bolivia groups support constitution
Bolivian groups supporting the ruling Movement towards Socialism (MAS) strategized Wednesday on support for the new Constitution and rejection of the autonomous statutes encouraged by authorities of Beni, Pando, Santa Cruz, and Tarija (Crescent).
Isaac Avalos, president of the Trade Union Confederation of Bolivian Farmers, told Prensa Latina that on May 4 in Santa Cruz, farmers will block the consultation, which is considered illegal.
He also explained that on Saturday, representatives of social movements will meet in that city's Plan Tres Mil community to agree on other measures against the referendum.
On Tuesday, the Episcopal Conference of Bolivia (CEB) expressed concern over the ideological polarization of the society, despite several attempts to bring the government and opposition together.
CEB Secretary Jesus Juarez said that during the 86th General Assembly of that institution, the bishops showed concern over the huge gaps between regions, social classes, and ethnic groups.
They also warned of excessive supremacy of political discourse and influence of "radical sectors hindering dialogue and consensus, which might lead to confrontations of unimaginable consequences."
About 40 bishops called for an end to internal confrontation, and asked the government and opposition to engage in dialogue, instead of launching insults and threats of violence.
