Indian President Pratibha Patil begins Monday her first Latin American tour to enhance bilateral, economic and trade ties with Brazil, Mexico and Chile.Nalin Suri, Indian Foreign Ministry secretary for Western Affairs, said the April 12-25 visit is honors the framework of south-south cooperation and helps tighten relations with the region.
President Pratibha Patil, minister Vilas Muttemyar, in charge of non conventional energy, three members of Parliament and numerous businessmen will visit Sao Paulo, Rio and Brasilia, Brazil, from April 13-16.Mexico is next with calls to the capital and Guadalajara, that will be followed by Santiago de Chile where she will stay until the 23rd.
Suri agenda includes meeting her respective counterparts and other officials, attending business forums with the local businessmen and signing two accords with each of the parties.Commercial exchange with Brazil rounds $3.2 billion, and with Chile, its main trade partner, $2.4 b. With Mexico, India plans to enhance the current $2 b to $5 b by 2010.
India's ONGC-Videsh Corp. also agreed with Venezuela state-run PDVSA to establish a joint venture at San Cristobal oil field at the visit this week by Oil and Gas Minister Murli Deora to Caracas.
