Mexico Farmers Warn of Food Shortage
Mexico's National Confederation of Farmers (CNC) warned the country is in danger of facing a food shortage although federal authorities have been denying it.In press statements, CNC President Cruz Lopez Aguilar said the prices of rice, sorghum, and corn are expected to rise, because cultivable lands worldwide have been reduced.
"We will end up with high prices on the market," as long as the risk of shortage increases, which the government intends to solve with imports, the union leader affirmed.
Rice in the US is being rationed, Aguilar noted, and wondered "what can you expect to happen in Mexico," where imports of wheat account for 50 percent, those of rice 65 percent, yellow rice 90 percent and oleaginous rice 95 percent.
After affirming that 50 percent of his country's food is foreign, Lopez Aguilar called for the application of internal competitive public programs to replace foreign purchases.
