"La edad de la peseta" by Cuban Pavel Giroud won the prize for the best Spanish language film at the recent Santa Barbara Film Festival.
The film was chosen over such Latin American films as Argentina's "XXY," by Lucia Puenzo, Brazil's "No por acaso," by Phillipe Barcinski, and Hispanic-Mexican "3:19," by Danny Saadia.
According to University of San Diego drama professor Jason Spadawski, "La edad de la peseta" shows there is "cinema of high artistic quality in Cuba and with a human and universal theme."
Spanish actress Mercedes Sampietro and Cubans Ivan Carreiro Lamothe and Susana Tejera played leading roles.
Giroud's film has won prizes in Havana, Cartagena de Indias, Ceara, San Francisco, and Quito Festivals so far.
