Heavy rains hitting coastal areas are a source of anxiety in Ecuador Tuesday because of overflowing rivers, with three people dead so far.
Municipal authorities confirmed the deaths of the three, including two children, as a result of floods in the provinces of Manabi, Canar, Los Rios, Guayas and Azuay.
TV broadcasts show floods sweeping away crops, houses and animals in Milagro, EL Triunfo, Puerto Inca and other localities in Guayas.
At least 500 families have been affected and 197,684 acres devastated by floods, according to Civil Defense.
Public Health Minister Carolina Chang announced that mobile brigades have joined the Ministry of Defense delivering tents and medicines in several coastal areas.
These are the customary winter rains that trigger floods and damage crops and seriously affect people living in low areas every year.
