Bolivian President Evo Morales called off his announced trip to the United States in order to focus on aiding victims of the weather La Nina phenomenon.
He made the announcement on Friday at the Government Palace, where he presented several decrees to aid victims of the flooding of the Bolivian Amazon River.
"In view of these problems of the families, I'm putting off my trip to the United States. I had many invitations, but I think it is more important to work with those affected," he explained.
Heavy rain and floods of the last few months have hit about 73,000 Bolivian families, with 61 people killed due to the inclemency of the weather.
Government spokesman Alex Contreras told Prensa Latina that the president will travel to Buenos Aires tomorrow to discuss energy issues with his peers Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (Brazil) and Cristina Fernandez (Argentina).
Contreras added that a European tour, including meetings with business people, members of Parliament and political leaders, might also be put on hold.
