Mexican legislators shun anti-UNAM drive

Mexico's opposition parties condemned as offensive a press release based on US and Colombian intelligence that term Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) a cell of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

Juan Guerra Ochoa, from the Revolutionary Democratic Party (PRD), said the presence of UNAM students and graduates at the Colombian-Ecuadorian border was pretext for a hit-and-miss press drive.

He explained as true motive of the anti-UNAM drive its scientific and academic achievements that rose as obstacle for neoliberal expansion.Samuel Aguilar (Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), called the charges offensive to the university, Mexico's intelligentsia and its people.

Aguilar accused the local conservative sectors of manipulating Colombia's violent bombing of Ecuadorian territory as a tool to discredit UNAM.Jose Manuel del Rio, president of the House Navy Commission, called the criticism by Mexican conservative politicians as superfluous.

Silvano Garay (Workers' Party (PT), lashed at the local media, which echo such charges to discredit a serious and reliable institution like UNAM.
