Bolivia prepares energy revolution

The Bolivian government announced on Wednesday it would begin to supply five million compact fluorescent light bulbs to all the homes in the cities of the so-called main highway, starting March 10.

According to a report by Assistant Energy Minister Ricardo Alarcon, the first stage of the Bolivia energy revolution includes free delivery of the new bulbs that use less energy than incandescent bulbs and will allow saving 40 to 50 % of energy used in homes. The replacement will begin in neighborhoods on the outskirts of La Paz, El Alto, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz, the official said.

The measure is included in the agreements of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) and the People's Trade Agreements, he explained.According to Alarcon, electric power supply and demand in the country is well balanced, thus Bolivia is far from suffering a crisis or implementing electricity rationing and the objective of the saving campaign is to raise Bolivians' awareness about rational consumption.

Bolivian electric power supply currently exceeds 1,000 megawatts, while demand reaches 900 megawatts, he pointed out.
