Media slashes coach Mexican football team

Mexico's 5-1 victory over Haiti at the Olympic soccer qualifier in the United States has been described as a failure rather than a success, as the country failed to qualify for the Beijing games.Mexican media castigated Coach Hugo Sanchez, whom they blame for the team's failure to qualify for the Olympic Games despite having the best training period in history.

El Universal said Mexico's failure to move up to the finals in the qualifier for the North, Central American and Caribbean region was a "Resounding Failure".La Cronica described the Mexican team's performance in similar terms, while El Financiero said the team was one goal too short to qualify.

Most Mexican newspapers published statements by Coach Sanchez, who admitted the team's setback and offered his resignation to the Football Federation, although his contract will expire in 2010.Neither fans nor the media forgive Sanchez for the results in the first two games of the qualifier: a 1-1 tie against Canada and a 1-2 defeat against Guatemala.

This is the tenth time (against nine qualifications) that the Mexican football team fails to qualify for the Olympics since the first fruitless effort in Paris in 1924.
