OAS probes Colombia raid

A mission from the Organization of American States (OAS) is visiting Monday the northern Ecuadorian zone where a Colombian raid took place, to gather information before a scheduled OAS foreign ministers meeting.

Presided over by OAS general secretary Jose Miguel Insulza, the group will move to Angostura, the place of the attack against a secret camp of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in this territory.

The commission seeks to collect evidence of a violation of national sovereignty on March 1 by the neighboring country"s military forces, provoking the breaking-off of diplomatic relations between Quito and Bogota. Results of this visit will be analyzed in the OAS foreign ministers" meeting gathering convened for March 17 in Washington.

After arriving in Quito, Insulza met with Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, who expressed his willingness to cooperate with this mission."There would have clarity, honesty, clean hands and nothing to hide," said Correa who wants the commission to prove that Colombia has violated his country"s sovereignty.

In addition to the head of State, the OAS secretary, who is accompanied by ambassadors to that organization from Bahamas, Panama, Argentina, Peru and Brazil, talked with Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Maria Isabel Salvador and representatives of civil society and human rights groups.

Insulza announced a news conference upon his return to Quito from the northern bombing zone, in the Amazonian province of Sucumbios. This visit takes place after Quito and Bogota have overcome the crisis in the Rio Group summit held in Dominican Republic, where the gathering condemned the Colombian aggression of this nation. nm/iff/lgo/mf PL-3
