Spain opposes Beijing Olympic boycott


Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said on Friday that Spain opposes a boycott against the Olympic Games in Beijing.The minister presented country's official stance in Slovenia, where he is attending a meeting of the European Union.

According to reports, Moratinos considered that the Olympics must be a platform to eliminate controversies.The world sports event is a chance to talk about dialogue, politics, all problems; that is why, we do not favor a boycott at all, he stressed.

Moratinos urged to boost the Olympic spirit and called on all parties involved to find a solution to the problems in Tibet, the pretext used by those who are promoting the boycott.The force of sports and the Olympic Games lies in that Olympic spirit, he added.

Some 350 Spanish athletes, more than 150 of whom have qualified, are expected to compete in the Beijing Olympics.Spain's best performance was at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, when it won 22 medals (13 gold, seven silver and two bronze).

On that occasion, Spain finished sixth by countries, after the unified team of the ex Soviet Union, the United States, Germany, China and Cuba.The Olympic Games are scheduled from August 8-24 in Beijing. The subvenues will be Hong Kong, Shanghai, Qingdao, Shenyang, Qinhuangdao and Tianjin.
