Mexican food imports skyrocket

Mexico's National Farmers Confederation (CNC) denounced on Monday that transnational enterprises have multiplied their food operations 100 percent this month alone.
CNC noted that this is occurring while the Mexican government refuses to renegotiate the agricultural chapter of the North American Free Trade Agreement, fostering enrichment of the great corporations to Mexico's detriment.
The opening of borders increased imports of US subsided food products, among them corn, powdered milk and fructose, a sugar substitute in the soft drinks industry.
Leaders of farm organizations opposed to NAFTA once again said they would not dialogue with the government unless transnationals are on the discussion agenda, and announced new actions against NAFTA.
The government is hoping to break the farmers and workers unity, "They think we are not strong but they are wrong," said Carlos Ramos, leader of the Plan de Ayala National Coordinating Office.
Gabino Gomez, leader of the National Agricultural Producers Alliance, said there will be a response to the stubbornness of the Mexican government and all those that underestimate their strength.
