Dominicans brace for hurricane season

The Dominicans, still suffering from two tropical storms are getting ready for the an active hurricane season this year, similar to that 2002.Late in 2007 and early in 2008 La Española, home to the Dominican Republic and Haiti, was battered by two tropical storms killing hundreds of people and devastating crops and infrastructure.

The drainage of a dam to avoid a natural disaster in the western province of Santiago brought about a national controversy over the decision that was still in force since the issue was put to the vote.

Hurricane season officially begins in June 1st. Experts have warned that at least 15 powerful storms will hit the Caribbean area.Heavy rains have already caused floodings in the last two weeks.

The Dominican provinces are under yellow alert because of the presence of those phenomena that were preceded by tornados in the western province of Las Vegas two weeks ago.

Forecasts are very bad and if precaution measures are not taken the country runs the risk of losing many lives and infrastructure, warned Gloria Ceballos, director of the National Weather Forecast Office.

Ceballos considered this season more active than the previous one and similar to that of 1950 when climate conditions were similar to the one they are living nowadays.
